Duplicate File Types

The file types panels offer an overview of duplicate file allocation by file type. The detail view shows the amount of duplicate content per file type.

Duplicate file types report showing duplicate count and wasted space by file type

For every file type encountered during the scan, the report gives you the type description and extension, the total number of files found and the space they occupy, the number of those that turned out to be duplicates, the space those duplicates consume, and - most tellingly - the percentage of that file type's disk space that is redundant. Sort by that last column and the answer to "where is my disk space actually going?" is usually sitting in the top three rows.

The report is a working tool, not just a summary. Right-click any file type to mark every duplicate of that type in the main report - a fast way to clear out redundant JPEGs or MP3s in one action - or to filter the duplicate report down to that type alone for closer inspection. By default only types that actually produced duplicates are listed; switch on Show All to see the complete distribution of everything scanned. The whole report can be printed, or saved as CSV for further analysis in a spreadsheet.

In addition to the detail view shown above, the file types panel also graphs duplicate file type distribution by count and by aggregate file size. The Top File Types chart shows the worst offenders at a glance - toggle between counts and sizes, choose how many entries to display, and print the chart, copy it to the clipboard, or save it as a bitmap, JPEG, or EPS image to drop into a report of your own.
