File Hash Calculator

Duplicate File Detective includes a useful file hash calculation tool that can compute multiple checksum values (CRC32, ADLER32, MD5, SHA1, SHA256, or SHA512) for multiple files.

Using the file hash calculator is simple: tick the checksum types you want, add one or more files, and click Compute File Hashes. Every selected algorithm is computed for every file in a single pass, and the results are listed side by side - so you can verify that a file you copied, downloaded, or restored from backup is bit-for-bit identical to its source without installing a separate checksum utility.

It's also the best way to build an intuition for the file comparison options. Run the same set of files through CRC32 and SHA-512 and the speed difference between a quick 32-bit checksum and a cryptographically strong 512-bit one becomes concrete rather than theoretical - which makes choosing a hashing algorithm for your duplicate file searches an informed decision rather than a guess.

The same checksum values appear as a report column after any content-based duplicate search, so you can read the hash of any duplicate file directly from the results report as well - useful when you need to quote a file's MD5 or SHA-256 checksum to someone else, or record it alongside an archived copy.
